Eat Your Veggies Part II

Nobody wants to undergo chemotherapy if they don’t need to. But for those who must, the advice to eat more vegetables and take your vitamins is just as important as ever.

Antioxidants May Aid Chemotherapy Patients

There is no evidence that antioxidant supplements interfere with the therapeutic effects of chemotherapy agents, according to a recent systematic review of the use of antioxidants during chemotherapy, available in the May, 2007 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Treatment Reviews. In fact, they may help increase survival rates, tumor response, and the patient’s ability to tolerate treatment.

Yet another reason.

Blood Sugar Balancing Act

Good Carbs, Bad Carbs » iFitandHealthy.com

It is a good idea to cut back on foods that are high on the glycemic index since they cause fat-storing spikes in blood sugar. But there are a few tricks that you can try so you won’t have to stop eating your favorites. For starters, pair high-GI foods with low-GI fare like eggs, cheese, poultry, fish or lean beef.

The protein in these foods slows the gut’s absorption of sugars, cutting the GI of high-carb foods by 33 percent or more. For example, when a baked potato is topped with cheese, its GI drops from 93 to 39.

You can also enjoy a small side of veggies drizzled with 4 tsp. apple cider vinegar. This may slows starch absorption. With a more stabilized blood sugar level, it’ll be easier to achieve a slimmer physique you’re after. [source: Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D.]

And you wonder why a “balanced diet” is so important.

Dairy, Fruits And Veggies May Help Smokers Quit

Smokers reported that consuming milk, water, fruits and vegetables worsened the taste of cigarettes, while consuming alcohol, coffee and meat enhanced their taste, according to the scientists. The findings could lead to a “Quit Smoking Diet” or to development of a gum or lozenge that makes cigarettes less palatable, said lead study investigator Joseph McClernon, Ph.D., an assistant research professor of medical psychiatry at the Duke Center for Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Research.

“With a few modifications to their diet — consuming items that make cigarettes taste bad, such as a cold glass of milk, and avoiding items that make cigarettes taste good, like a pint of beer — smokers can make quitting a bit easier,” McClernon said.

No wonder smoking and bars go hand-in-hand. Problem for smokers is, it is so much easier to eat the things that contribute to smoking than those that help you quit.

However, there is one simple way to help keep your health care costs low: stay healthy for as long as possible.

And to do that, Refrigerator Raider suggests, you should:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise
  • Eat fruits and veggies
  • Socialize

Americans still refusing to eat their veggies - Diet & Nutrition - MSNBC.com

Fewer than a third of American adults eat the amount of fruits and vegetables the government recommends, a trend that’s remained steady for more than a decade, health officials said Thursday. That’s “well below” the government’s goal of getting 75 percent of Americans to eat two servings of fruits and three of vegetables each day by 2010, said Dr. Larry Cohen of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Our recommendation is to follow the government’s recommendation while it still is a recommendation. The last thing any of us needs is IRS agents coming around with fresh produce.

A veggie variety act is healthiest - The Diabetes Blog

Colorado State University researchers found that, despite eating one less serving daily, people who consumed a wider array of vegetables experienced more health benefits than those who chose from a smaller assortment. The source behind these benefits come from phytochemicals, compounds that guard cells against free radical damage. By eating a wider assortment of vegetables, people had a better chance of consuming a greater amount of protective phytochemicals.

Plus you don’t get sick of anything.
